Recently I wrote a letter to Stabroek News under the headline ‘Amazon Warriors need aggressive, balanced team to bring home CPL crown’ where I called on Mr Bobby Ramroop to fire Omar Khan as the manager and Roger Harper as the coach of the Warriors team for this year’s CPL. Well, after watching the players’ draft with Mr Omar Khan, and with Mr Ramroop picking the Warriors team, I am convinced that the Guyana Amazon Warriors will not bring home the crown this year.
How on earth could Jason Mohammed and Rayad Emrit retain their places in the team when their performances over the years have been poor to say the least. In fact I would like to submit that they contribute to the Warriors not winning the tournament as yet. I googled their stats for 20/20 cricket and they don’t make for pleasant reading. In 71 T20 matches Jason Mohammed has a score of 985 runs at an average of 25.92 and a strike rate of 99.69. Imagine in 20/20 cricket Jason Mohammed has a strike rate of below 100 when a quality 20/20 batsman would have a strike rate of between 140-160, yet this guy is being picked by Omar Khan year after year. In 106 T20 games Rayad Emrit has a score of 273 runs at an average of 11.37 and a strike rate of 118.18 and 120 wickets at an average of 21.04 with an economy rate of 7.23. Editor these stats speaks for themselves, and Rayad Emrit can never be considered as a genuine all-rounder, especially given his batting figures. I would have gone for Colin Munro who was bought by the Knight Riders for $40,000 instead of Rayad Emrit who was bought for $70,000, thus saving Mr Ramroop $30,000. In addition, I would have bought Chanderpaul Hemraj instead of Jason Mohammed. Mohammed was bought by Mr Ramroop for $40,000 and Hemraj was bought by the Saint Lucia Stars for $5,000. Mr Ramroop would have saved another $35,000 and I can guarantee with Munro and Hemraj in the side the Warriors would bring home the CPL crown this year. Anyhow, I hope they prove me wrong.
