The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTT) is appealing for corporate support to assist it participate at this year’s Caribbean Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships in Havana, Cuba from April 2-8.
The GTTA said it has attempted to accumulate funds for the teams to participate at the championships, however, it is still some way off with respect to the amount needed.
“The association, through its efforts, has managed to acquire some funds. However, based on the enormity of the financial undertaking and based on the association expending a significant amount of monies to have the senior men and women’s team attend the CAC Games qualification championships, we would, therefore, require an additional three million dollars in order to ensure the teams’ participation at the prestigious games,” the release stated.
“In this regard, the GTTA is making a desperate plea for consideration from organizations since it would be disheartening to disappoint the young representatives and stars of our country if we are unable to secure funding, which would have negative implications for the psyche and development of our players and the long-term plans for our programmes,” the release added.
The likes of Miguel Wong, Jamal Nicholas, Niron Bissu and Kaysan Ninvalle are among some of the brightest young prospects selected by GTTA participate in the tournament, which represents the next generation of our future champions expected to emerge from Guyana.
“The Caribbean Junior and Cadet Table Tennis championships is a signature activity on the GTTA’s calendar of events since it represents the basis for regional table tennis supremacy, serves as an incubator to develop many of our young, developing talents, allows our players to vie for regional honors and to integrate and learn of other regional cultures.
“It will also allow the association to lobby for key international support among other benefits,” the release stated.
“We [GTTA] feel they will represent the Guyana brand with pride and our chances for success are very realistic,” the release added.
The championships will also be used as a qualifying event to select the best four boys and best four girls’ teams at 15 and 18 years and under, from the Caribbean region, to compete against teams from Central America, South America and North America in the Pan American Table Tennis Championships scheduled for July 2018.
The championships will also be used to secure ranking points which are critical to the future development and success of our national junior teams and players.
