A 31-year-old mason was on Tuesday told that he would need to undergo counselling after he was faced with charges of threatening and assaulting family members.
The first charge against Shaheed Murray states that on March 18, 2018, at Rasville, Roxanne Burnham Gardens, he made use of threatening language to his mother, Anida Naimah Murray.
It was further alleged that on the same day, he unlawfully assaulted Hasan Murray.
The man pleaded not guilty to both charges after they were read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in Georgetown.
His mother told the court that he usually behaves in the manner described in the charges when he is under the influence of alcohol. However, she then stated that her family did not wish to offer any evidence in the matters. When asked by the magistrate if he had any previous matters in any court, the accused stated that he had been charged before with assault.
As a result, the magistrate requested that a Probation Officer be summoned. However, one was not available at that time. The magistrate then told the mother that she would not have the charges dropped as the defendant also stated that he had been charged before with similar offences. She stated that the accused would have to seek counselling and would have to attend Alcoholics Anonymous.
The magistrate then placed the man on $20,000 bail for the threatening language offence and released him on self-bail for the other charge.
