Dear Editor,
Let’s say President Janet Jagan and her aides made a typo (an extra zero typed in and no one caught the error), but at that time (1999-2010), no one knew oil was under the seabed.
In 2016, it was time to re-negotiate and amend/update the 1999 contract. The coalition government knew oil had been found. What excuse could they have for failing to correct the 600 v 60 blocks error?
Today, it is well known that this item in the contract violated the law. What excuse could the coalition government have for refusing to try to correct the error?
It is time for civic-minded Guyanese to sue in the courts of Guyana; this 2016 contract is a clear violation of the law. Such pressure created by a lawsuit, together with public pressure from the Guyanese people, should surely force the government to re-open negotiations with the oil companies.
Yours faithfully,
Mike Persaud
