An Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara miner was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with possession of almost 15 pounds of cannabis, which police say were found in buckets of oil in the interior.
Keemo Argyle, 40, of Lot 25 Main Street, Ann’s Grove, was read a charge which alleged that on March 23rd, at 70 Kilometre Outpost, he had 6,646 grammes (equivalent to 14.6 pounds) of cannabis.
Subsequent to the charge being read by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in Georgetown, the accused pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield noted that the accused was stopped at 70 Kilometre checkpoint, where he was a passenger in a minibus. He was asked by the police to identify his belongings, and he identified three red buckets. The suspected drugs were discovered upon examination of the contents of the buckets.
When questioned further, Mansfield said the accused indicated that someone by the name of ‘Tall Man’ gave him the substance to drop to Aranka.
Argyle, when granted the opportunity, told the court that when he was given the buckets they were sealed and he had no idea what was in them.
The prosecutor added that the accused was questioned further and could not give a contact number, address or other particulars about ‘Tall Man.’ He noted that the accused also has a matter of a similar nature at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court. He objected to bail being granted, while noting that there was no special reasons given to the court.
Based on what was stated by the prosecutor, the magistrate denied the accused bail and remanded him to prison. The matter was then adjourned to April 25th when it will be heard at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
