A worker attached to the Neighbourhood Democratic Council in Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice was struck and killed by a lorry on Sunday around 6.30 pm.
Majeed Indraneah, 68, of Lot 651 Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice was walking to his daughter’s house where he would usually spend his nights, when he was struck by the lorry.
The driver of the motor lorry GMM 4713, who is from Section ‘S’ D’ Edward Village, West Coast Berbice has since been placed into police custody and is said to be assisting with the investigation.
Stabroek News was told that Indraneah was attempting to cross the road, when he was struck by the allegedly speeding lorry. The man, who was pitched some distance away sustained a fractured hip and fractured skull.
He was rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where he was seen by doctors and subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. However, he succumbed en route to the New Amsterdam Hospital and was pronounced dead on his arrival there.
His granddaughter, Shamela Ramnarine, 24, yesterday stated that on Sunday she was returning home minutes after 6 pm and saw her grandfather heading to her mother’s house. “He does live alone, so night time he does go sleep there, I pass and see he walking and wave he off and me come home”.
According to the granddaughter, moments after arriving home, she was informed that her grandfather was involved in an accident and was being taken to the hospital. She then rushed to the hospital, where she saw her grandfather lying on a stretcher being transferred in an ambulance to be taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted tomorrow to determine Indraneah’s cause of death.
