A man was yesterday remanded to prison by a city court on a breaking and entering and larceny charge.
It is alleged that Dwayne Peters, 21, between March 16th and March 17th, at Mandela Avenue, broke and entered the dwelling house of Delmar Booker and stole a Samsung Galaxy cellphone, valued $80,000.
A second charge stated that Peters, between the same dates, broke and entered the same home and stole a heat gun, valued $8,000, and a quantity of clothing, valued $15,000.
Police prosecutor Arvin Moore stated that the complainant secured his home and went out. Upon his return, he discovered the front door was open and the items listed in the charges were missing.
Peters initially pleaded guilty to the first charge, telling the court that the house that the police are saying he broke and entered was where he used to live and the complainant had put him out of the home and left his belongings on the landing. He stated that he went to the house to retrieve his belongings and also went in and took a bath. He stated that he did not know anything about the stolen phone. The man also told the court that the complainant stole his tattoo gun and he has not been able to work since.
After hearing Peters’ explanation, the court then entered a not guilty plea. He pleaded not guilty to the second charge as well.
Prosecutor Moore objected to bail being granted based on the prevalence of the offence and the possibility that the accused would not attend court.
Magistrate Judy Latchman subsequently adjourned the matter until April 16th and remanded the man to prison.
