A mother of six from Yarakita Village, North West District, is now dead after attempts to get her medical treatment following the at-home delivery of her last child proved futile last Thursday.
Sherene Abrahams, 35, died sometime around 5 pm last Thursday while being transported to the Mabaruma District Hospital, several hours away from her home.
Stabroek News was told by a resident, that Abrahams’ husband had left their home in Yarakita, a village close to the Venezuela border, on Thursday morning to notify the Community Health Worker (CHW) that she was experiencing contractions and was in need of medical attention. However, the CHW reportedly told the man that his wife would have to visit the health centre since she could not leave the clinic.
It was explained that by time the man returned home from the health centre, he found that his wife had already delivered their child. However, she retained the
placenta.
The man then journeyed back to the health centre, where he met with the CHW and reported what had transpired.
He was subsequently informed by the woman that Abrahams would have to travel to the Mabaruma District Hospital.
The Toshao of the village was notified and he along with another resident mobilised transportation for Abraham.
In addition, the health worker reportedly called the medex at Mabaruma and informed her of the situation and preparations were made and a medical team was dispatched to meet them half way.
Unfortunately, by the time the team met the group, Abrahams had already died.
Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told that following the woman’s death, the health worker was instructed by a health official from the region not to perform any duties. However, residents of the community have expressed concern since she is the only health worker in the area and operates the health centre.
