All roads will lead to the Haslington Market Tarmac tonight, when the 6th edition of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ East Coast Demerara zone, kicks-off from 19:00hrs.
According to the event coordinator, Three Peat Promotions, “This year promises to be exciting and unpredictable. Many of the competing teams possess the quality to claim the title so a pre-tournament favourite is very hard to select. The event will be highly competitive and the spectators will be treated to a spectacle.”
In the opening fixture, Plaisance-A lock horns with Belfield Warriors, while Victoria Church Yard battle Beterverwagting (BV)-B from 19:30hrs.
The third fixture pits Buxton Diamond against Mahaica Guinness Bar from 20:00hrs, while BV-A faceoff with Police-B at 20:30hrs.
In the fifth showdown, Melanie-A match skills with Uprising from 21:00hrs, while Paradise-A tackle Plaisance-B at 21:30hrs.
The final two showdowns pit defending champion Melanie-B against Buxton from 22:00hrs and home side Haslington Hypers against Mahaica Determinators at 22:30hrs.
The respective winners advancing to the group stage on Saturday March 31st. Upon the conclusion of the round-robin stage, the top two teams from each zone will advance to the semi-final round on Monday April 2nd.
The grand finale will also be contested on the aforesaid date. In last year’s finale, Melanie-B defeated Plaisance–B 1-0, while Buxton Diamond finished third following an identical score-line over BV-B.
Winner of the competition will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy. They will also earn an automatic berth to the National Championship.
On the other hand, the second, third and fourth place finishers will receive $150,000, $100,000 and $75,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
Meanwhile, Guinness Plate Championship also be staged, with the winner walking away with $50,000. Director of Sport Christopher Jones is slated to open the action with the ceremonial kickoff after meeting the respective teams.
