Compliments of the best female leaper in the Region, Chantoba Bright, Guyana continued to mine precious metal on Day Two of the CARIFTA Games here yesterday in the Bahamas.
Bright followed up her long jump gold medal performance on Friday by adding a bronze in the triple jump Girls-U20 event.
Bright who turns 18 in two days, hopped, skipped and jumped to 12.14m in the keenly contested event.
The Jamaican duo, Leone Farquharson (12.24m) and Lotavia Brown (12.23m) finished first second and Monifah Djoe (12.11m) of Suriname finished fourth.
Meanwhile, Daniel Williams qualified for today’s stacked 200m Boys U-20 final after placing second in heat three in a personal best 21.21s behind Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor who was the fastest qualifier.
Taylor clocked 20.65s to be seeded first ahead of the meet’s fastest man, Joel Johnson (20.90s) of the Bahamas who won the marquee 100m event in 10.31s on Saturday.
Williams is seeded sixth heading into today’s final.
Kenisha Phillips has also qualified for the finals of the 200m today. She finished third in the fastest heat of the Girls U-20 help lap event in 24.48s. Phillips is seeded seventh.
Meanwhile, Deshana Skeete, bronze medalist in the Girls U-17 400m placed second in her 200m heat but was the ninth fastest overall and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final.
In other results yesterday, long jumpers, Princess Brown (5.47m), Tremaine Brown (7.09m) and Carl Williams (7.02m) finished sixth, fourth and seventh in their respective events, the U-17 Girls and U-20 Boys.
The 4x100m Girls U20 team finished fourth behind Jamaica, Bahamas and Martinique.
Cordell Charles (9:22.86) and 1500m bronze medalist, Murphy Nash (9:26.05) finished fifth and sixth respectively in the Boys 3000m U-17 race. The most entertaining event of the night that had the crowd in a frenzy after hometown athlete, Curtis Mitchell held off the Jamaican twins Giovouni and Gianni Henry to win the event in 9:04.65.
Guyana’s medal tally sits at six with two gold medals and four bronze medals. It was not all about winning medals however, as some two personal milestones were established by our young ambassadors, CARIFTA debutant, Skeete and Williams.
The 47th edition of the meet concludes today with sessions at 9am and 4pm.
