Colts, Pacesetters, Half Mile Bulls and Nets all won their matches when the fifth Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) ‘Road to Mecca’ Club Championships continued Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.
Colts brushed aside arch rivals Ravens 72-59. Shane Webster top scored with 17 points while Stanton Rose and Domair Gladstone added 14 and 10 points respectively.
Darcel Harris netted the game-high 18 points while Ryan Stephney added 15 points.
In another fixture, Pacesetters grounded Amelia’s Ward Jets 90-79.
Nathan Saul led the way with 24 points with Stephon Gillis and Sherlon Legall the next best scorers with 17 and 15 points each.
Adding eight and six points each were Royston Siland and Michael Turner. For Jets, Dennis Niles battled to 18 points, while Donnel Benjamin contributed 12 points.
Chipping in with 10 points each were Akini Wilson, Neil Simon and Adrian Webster.
Meanwhile, Half Mile Bulls trampled Raiders 74-64.
Terron Welch shot his way to 20 points with Devon Thompson and Jamal Bethune supporting with 17 and 15 points respectively.
For Raiders, Selwyn Henry, Sheldron Noel and Sean Muss scored 14, 10 and nine points correspondingly.
Nets clipped Eagles 68-66 with Drumson McAuley top scoring with 22 points for Nets while Pelham Doris, Mortimer Robertson and Fabian Johnson supported with 13, 12 and nine points respectively.
For Eagles, Travis Belgrave recorded an impressive 30 points, with Ryan Gullen and Michael Richards supporting with 15 and 11 points each.
The tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue with another four matches.
The competing teams will be divided into two groups of six, with the resulting group winners and runners-up advancing to the semi-final round.
Group-1 features two time defending champion Colts, Half Mile Bulls [Linden], Plaisance Guardians, Retrieve Raiders [Linden], Ravens and the lone Berbice representative Canje Knights.
Group-2 consists of Victory Valley Royals [Linden], Nets, Pacesetters, Amelia’s Ward Jets [Linden], Eagles and Kobras.
The other playing dates are the 13th, 14th, 15th, 20th, 21st, with the semi-finals slated for the 22nd and the grand finale pencilled for the 28th.
Winner of the event will pocket $600,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up will receive $400,000 and the corresponding accolade. The third place finisher receives $300,000 and a trophy.
On the individual side, $200,000 will awarded to the Most Valuable Player (MVP), while $100,000 each will be awarded to the individuals that secure the Most Points, Most Rebounds and Most Improved Player accolades respectively.
