Doctor, Sundarshanandan Persaud stepped out of his scrubs and into blue posing trunks on Sunday evening and claimed the title of overall Novices Bodybuilding Champion.
The 29-year old orthopedic surgeon at the West Demerara Hospital, shone brightest under the lights of the National Cultural Centre stage, out flexing and out posing the competition to be awarded the coveted accolade when the bodybuilding federation staged its first fixture for 2018.
Persaud, of Fitness 53 Gym, used his sharp physique to slice through the bantamweight class which had four other musclemen.
He then returned to pose down with the other category champions, Vishnu Ramcharran (junior), Allan Savoury (masters), Odwin Yansen (welterweight) and Fabian Roza (light middleweight) and took the overall spoils and one year’s bragging rights.
Ms. Bikini
Diciula DeSousa of Space Gym was the near perfect mix of muscularity, symmetry, beauty and style and took home the winner’s trophy for the category ahead of six other competitors. The 19-year-old crowd favorite, bested her gym mate, Angelica Barroncas while Fitness Paradise’s Jennifer Gordon was adjudged third.
Men’s Physique
It was not an easy choice, but the judges awarded the Men’s Physique showdown trophy to Space Gym’s Tarik Dakhil ahead of fellow Space Gym athlete, Renaldo Caldeira and Fitness 53’s Xavier Kirton. Among a group of seven physique competitors, Dakhil, 24, brought the shape and stage presence the judges most wanted to see.
He was confident, well-proportioned, well-muscled and not overly conditioned.
Last year’s Novices champion, Nolan Smith along with Eybo Orford provided added entertainment by guest posing at the event.
Sponsors included Fitness Express, the Trophy Stall, Gandhi’s General Store and Coel’s Boutique.
Next up on the local competition calendar is the flagship National Senior Championships. The event is billed for July 15 at the Marriott Hotel. (Emmerson Campbell)
