Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League champion, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will be unable to participate in the CONCACAF Caribbean Club Shield due to financial constraints.
This unfortunate and embarrassing development occurred at the eleventh hour. According to an official release from the federation, “The GDF FC received from CONCACAF a total of twelve thousand United States Dollars (USD $12,000) as subvention to offset costs related to air travel while the club was required to provide the remaining sum. Unfortunately, the GDF FC has been unable to acquire the additional amount resulting in their non-participation in this tournament.”
The correspondence revealed that the GFF tried its utmost to resolve the situation through one of its partners, but failed to acquire a resolution due to the lack of time. The team had been slated to depart local shores yesterday.
President of the GFF Wayne Forde said, “I, along with the Executive Committee, will be engaging the leadership of the GDF to determine the way forward for the club.”
GDF earned the right to participate in the Caribbean Championship scheduled for the Dominican Republic from April 12th-21st, after clinching the Elite League title last season.
