Dear Editor,
The Guyana Peace Council (GPC) salutes the Government and people of Venezuela on the occasion of the establishment of its First Republic on April 19, 1810. This historic action paved the way for the eventual overthrow of Spanish colonial rule not only in Venezuela but in the continent as a whole.
April 19 is indeed a significant date in the evolution of Venezuelan politics which ushered in fundamental changes in the political, economic and social life of the country.
The Guyana Peace Council is cognizant of the challenges facing the Venezulean people at this time which threaten to derail the gains of the First Republic and those of the Bolivarian Revolution.
The GPC is however confident that the people of Venezuela would determine the way forward in national elections due on May 20, 2018.
It is the hope of the GPC that the will of the Venezuelan people will be expressed in free and fair elections without any interference from internal or external forces.
