A solid batting effort from Marvin Prashad backed by a measly spell from Nigel Deodat helped orchestrate a 71-run win for the National U17’s over Essequibo in second round action of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Hand-In-Hand Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Inter-County U19 50 overs tournament at Everest, yesterday.
It was a low scoring affair which saw the National U17’s, sent in to bat by Essequibo, found themselves losing early wickets and finding it difficult to get their innings going to the extent that at the end of the 30th over, the score was 39 – 6.
It was that point that Prashad, a former National U15 captain, began to find his straps as he eased his way to five fours and four maximums in a fine knock of 63 to before his side was dismissed for 131 in 47.4 overs.
Only skipper Sachin Singh (20) and Deodat (15) reached double figures.
Beesham Moses (3-12) from 10 overs and Joel Fortune (2-26) from his quota led a fine bowling effort for Essequibo who must have fancied their chances at that point.
However, it was not to be as they were dismissed for 60 in 40.5 overs with only Moses (12) who batted at number 11 reaching double figures. Deodat was the man behind the destruction, ending with 4-17 from 10 economical overs to see the U17’s rebounding from opening round defeat against Berbice.
