Unbeaten North Georgetown Secondary School (NGSS) yesterday defeated Mae’s Secondary School by eight wickets in the final of the East Georgetown Zone of the Guyana Cricket Board/ Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society Limited/ National Sports Commission/ National Secondary School Cricket League at the Everest Cricket Club, Camp Road.
NGSS restricted Mae’s to 74 all before chasing the target down in 10.5 overs
NGSS skipper, Wayne Bollers won the toss and elected to field after the match was delayed nearly 90 minutes because no balls were available.
However, no overs were lost in the 30-overs-a-side contest.
Marvin Permaul and Afelie Henry removed the two openers cheaply while Ushardiva Balgobin toiled for the top score of 35.
Balgobin played the majority of the scoring shots in a 32-run fourth-wicket partnership with Jonathan Van Lange who fell for four. Extras accounted for 22 runs that boosted the total to 74.
Michael Pooran ended on 4-12 from 5.3 overs while Marvin Permaul and Ravon Bailey bagged 2-6 and 2-9 respectively.
In their reply Shivnaand Gosain and Pooran put on a 50-run partnership for the first wicket before Balgobin removed Pooran who tried to clear square leg only to be caught for eight. Gosain continued to milk the bowlers with his captain, Bollers with him but a brain freeze from Gosain with the scores level saw him trying to finish the game in style, attempting to hit Balgobin for a six over long off only to be caught for a good knock of 41. A wide ended the contest in favour of NGSS as Balgobin fought back with the ball for his 2-24. Meanwhile, Parika thrashed Vergenoegen by 169 runs in the final of the East Bank Essequibo Zone at Tuschen, posting 228-8 and bowling out Vergenoegen for 60.
Parika took first strike and saw Travis Christian hammering three sixes and nine fours for an unbeaten 89 while Wazim Mohammed smashed seven fours and two sixes for his 61 to lead Parika to their mammoth total. Avinash Persaud was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3-48 from six overs.
In reply, Vergenoegen were skittled for 60 with Mohammed returning with the ball to snatch 7-16 after Christian claimed two early wickets.
only Amos Baird (18) reached double figures.
Parika will now face Leguan at Tuschen Monday while Chase Academy and Christ Church Secondary will clash in the final of the North Georgetown Zone at Everest with Charlestown and Tucville playing the final of the South Georgetown on Wednesday at the same venue.
