The month of May promises to be a busy one for the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) and its boxers.
According to President of the association, Steve Ninvalle, some of the activities for the upcoming month includes the staging of the National Novices Championships and the participation of some standout boxers at overseas tournaments.
First up, the Andrew Lewis National Novices Championship originally scheduled for this weekend has been shifted to May 4-6 at the National Gymnasium.
Each night, the event starts at 19:00hrs and admission is listed at $500 for stands and $1000 for ringside.
The event will witness the return of the Republican Boxing Gym which was burnt last year and the debut of the Savannah Gym out of Lethem.
Meanwhile, representative at the recent Commonwealth Games, Keevin Allicock and Colin Lewis will be winging out to compete at the May 26 to June 10 South American Games in Bolivia.
Ninvalle said yesterday that he hopes “it will help in adequate preparation for the CAC Games”.
Allicock (bantamweight) and Lewis (light welterweight) have qualified for the CAC Games scheduled for Barranquilla, Colombia from July 19-August 3.
Ninvalle also pointed out that Best Boxer at the 2016 Caribbean Boxing Championships, Christopher Moore (lightweight) along with Isaiah Moore (flyweight) are scheduled to attend the American Boxing Confederation Youth Continental Championships to be held in Colorado Springs, USA from May 19 to 26.
The tournament, which will be held at Hotel Elegante will see approximately 175 boxers from 20 different countries take part. The competition provides a final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aries, and also offers a qualification pathway to the 2018 Youth World Championships in August.
Ninvalle pointed out that the sojourn to Colorado Springs is subject to sponsorship.
