Three bandits beat and robbed the guard and two other men at a Superbet shop in an attack at Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown yesterday morning, which residents believe is gang-related.
Commander of ‘A’ Division Leslie James confirmed that the popular betting service was robbed by three “identifiable” men, who fired off shots during their escape.
According to James, around 9.40 am, the guard of the establishment, Wendell Maynard, was making his way out of the shop when two men, who were both armed with guns, pounced on him and demanded that he hand over the cash.
Maynard, who was in the company of two men– Damien Elliot and Michael Hussein—refused to hand over the cash and a scuffle ensued. The third bandit joined in on the attack and they started beating the three men in their heads with their guns.
The three bandits then forcibly relieved Maynard of a bag that reportedly contained $87,000 and jumped onto two CG motorcycles. While they were attempting to escape, a licensed firearm holder fired a shot towards them. The three bandits returned fire and then fled.
The beaten men did not suffer severe injuries.
Leopold Street residents were tightlipped about the attack. However, one resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, suspected that the attack was part of a turf war. The resident explained that the issue can also be traced back to drugs but did not want to expound further.
When questioned on whether the attack could be gang related, James told Stabroek News that he has not received any information that could confirm such a claim.
Earlier this year, shopkeeper Jacqueline Lagnah, 55, of Leopold and Breda streets, was shot twice in her back after being caught in the crossfire when a gang related brawl erupted.
James also confirmed that no arrests have been made as yet and the police were still continuing their investigation.
