Guyana Defence Force captain Orwain Sandy, who was charged with the murder of his common-law wife, Reona Payne, today appeared before a city magistrate for a report on the psychiatric evaluation he was set to undergo.
The charge against Sandy stated that on March 31st, 2018, at First Street, Alexander Village, he murdered Payne.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves, reported to the court that they had received the psychiatric evaluation report from Dr. Bhiro Harry. The report was not read in court, however, reports indicate that the accused was deemed fit to stand trial by Dr. Harry.
Sandy’s attorney, James Bond, requested an adjournment date, as he had previously asked that his client be allowed to undergo an independent psychiatric evaluation.
Magistrate Judy Latchman, who presided over the matter, subsequently adjourned the case to May 24th.
Sandy, while leaving the courtroom in tears, uttered apologies to the relatives of the deceased.
On the day of the event, after shooting a fleeing Payne some 14 times, Sandy reportedly drove himself to the Ruimveldt Police Station and informed the police there of what transpired.
He also handed over the suspected murder weapon.
Although both Sandy and Payne were married to other people, they were living together for about five years.
