A miner was yesterday fined and sentenced to three years in jail, after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of 25 grammes of cannabis.
Ravi Dev Mohan pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on May 1, at the Four Miles toll gate, Port Kaituma, he had in his possession 25 grammes (equivalent to 0.05 pounds) of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Police prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that on the day in question, at about 11.50hrs, the police from Port Kaituma were on patrol duty at the Four Miles toll gate, when they saw an ATV bearing the plate number CH 3728.
He further related that the defendant was observed on the ATV and the police requested to search him. It was during the search that the police found in the defendant’s hoodie, a black plastic bag containing several clear parcels with the suspected narcotics.
Mohan, a father of one, when asked if he wished to say anything in relation to the charge, chose not to.
Magistrate Judy Latchman then informed the defendant that in arriving at her decision for sentencing, she had taken into consideration his early guilty plea, the prevalence of the offence, and the need to prohibit others from committing the crime.
The defendant was sentenced to three years in jail and fined $30,000.
