A 32-year-old man was yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly having in his possession an unlicenced firearm.
The charge alleged that Lawrence Ellis called ‘Piggy’ on May 9th at Dennis Street, Campbellville had in his possession a .38 pistol without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Ellis pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The facts in relation to the matter stated that on the day in question at about 8 pm the police were on a mobile patrol in the Campbellville area, proceeding east along Dennis Street while the defendant was travelling in the opposite direction on a pedal cycle. A search was carried out on him and the court heard that the man took the firearm from his crotch and threw it into a clump of bushes. The firearm was recovered with six live rounds.
Magistrate Leron Daly refused bail and adjourned the matter until May 25th.
