The Head Teacher of a North West District Primary School is now nursing wounds to his head and neck after an irate sibling of a student of the school dealt him several lashes with a cutlass yesterday afternoon.
Stabroek News understands that the incident occurred just after lunch time yesterday in the compound of Wauna Primary School, when the assailant marched in and began verbally and physically abusing Deon Charles, the Head Teacher of the school, before broadsiding him several times with the cutlass.
According to a teacher, who spoke to this newspaper, the incident stemmed from an allegation made earlier in the day against a female student of the school’s secondary department, of having “love marks” on her neck.
It was noted that the information was communicated to Charles who instructed two female teachers, one of whom is an elder sister of the female student, to check the child’s neck. However, the teachers found the allegation to be untrue and the student was dismissed.
Thinking this was the end of the issue, teachers and students proceeded on lunch break. However, the alleged attacker returned just after lunch armed with a cutlass and began accosting Charles, who was in the school’s kitchen at the time, talking to the cook.
Stabroek News understands that the accused began verbally abusing the Head Teacher and even threatened to kill him, before launching a physical attack. The attack resulted in Charles sustaining slashes on his neck and head which necessitated him seek medical attention at the Mabaruma District Hospital. The police, who were summoned to the school, took statements from the teacher and other persons who witnessed the incident.
The alleged attacker, on the other hand, managed to flee the area before the police arrived, and as of last evening, had not been apprehended.
