Dear Editor,
The recent conversation on the relevance of Creolese at the University of Guyana was interesting – especially in view of my doctoral thesis. Last year I conducted in-depth interviews for my thesis research and almost all were delivered in Creolese. (I personally prefer the word ‘Patwah’ to ‘Creolese’ as the latter may be regarded as that which has a nexus with a particular ethnic group.)
I especially appreciate Sean Ori’s humility in declaring his change of mind on the issue in his last missive (`Changed mind on Creolese’, SN May 14/18). In an age where it is fashionable to cuss down, it was a breath of fresh air to observe this reticence.
Yours faithfully,
