Joel Alleyne produced the biggest upset of the Open men’s singles division of the Guyana Table Tennis Association national championships yesterday when he defeated US-based Matthew Khan in the opening round of the last eight round robin finals.
Alleyne defeated Khan, one of the pre-tournament favourites, 11-4, 15-17, 11-1, and 11-3.
After three rounds, defending champion Christopher Franklin and Shemar Britton were in the lead with three wins while Khan, Alleyne and Colin France had two wins.
Nigel Bryan had one win and two losses while Elishaba Johnson and Kyle Edghill lost all three of their matches.
In the results of some of the matches played Franklin defeated France 11-4, 11-7, 11-8, won against Johnson 11-3, 11-6, 11-8 while Britton defeated France 13-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-6 and won against Bryan 14-12, 11-1, 11-4.
Edghill lost to Khan 4-11, 11-9, 11-5, 7-11 and 11-13 and Bryan defeated Edghill 12-10, 13-11 and 11-4.
The remaining rounds will take place this evening from 6pm at the National Gymnasium.
