With Youth Week having begun on Sunday, students and teachers from the St. Ignatius Secondary School took to the streets of Lethem to play their part in raising awareness on child abuse.
The march was a part of a youth rally organized by the school and saw some 700 students of the school march down the streets of Lethem, holding placards and chanting as they passed by. Students were chanting, “We are the Future”, “Don’t touch me, I go talk” and “Stop Child Abuse”
Upon the completion of the march, students and teachers alike were addressed by the Head Teacher of the School, who spoke on the occurrence of child abuse in the Indigenous communities of the Rupununi, and Youland Moffett, of the Non-Governmental Organisation, Red Thread, whose presentation focused on violence against women.
