Deonarine Bhihari, the man who is accused of murdering an Enmore man 18 years ago and then going on the run, was yesterday charged with the crime and remanded to prison.
The charge alleged that on May 21st, 2000, at Logwood, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, Bhihari murdered Daniel Singh.
Bhihari was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which was read to him by Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court..
Magistrate Hugh subsequently remanded him to prison and adjourned the matter until June 15th.
On May 21st, 2000, Singh, 49, a single father of four, of Hope West, Enmore, was chopped to death by a cutlass-wielding man, said to be Bhihari. The man also hacked three of Singh’s dogs to death and injured another one while three of his children stood and watched on in horror.
After the attack, Bhihari allegedly fled to Venezuela. He was arrested last Saturday at his sister’s house in Enmore after returning to Guyana sometime this year as a result of the current economic turmoil in Venezuela.
Family members of the deceased were present in court when the charge was being read to the accused yesterday.
Relatives of the deceased man had told Stabroek News that they were made aware of the Bhihari’s presence in the country and had been working with the police as well as lawyers on apprehending him.
