Rupununi bridge collapse: The excess weight of this trailer truck, which was transporting an excavator (seen at right), collapsed the Yamatiwau Bridge yesterday afternoon, cutting off access from the South Rupununi to the Central Rupununi. Nicholas Fredericks, Toshao of Shulinab Village, last night told Stabroek News no one was seriously hurt in the accident. Fredericks said the driver of the truck erred. “They were supposed to offload the excavator and walk it over the creek and then reload it. But they didn’t do that and we have to suffer now,” he lamented, while noting that the bridge serves as the gateway to villages in South and Central Rupununi.
