Sudesh Fitzgerald and Melisa Smartt won their respective categories when the Guyana Darts Association’s (GDA) Massy Industries Colgate/ Palmolive Darts tournament concluded at the Malteenoes Sports Club.
Both players earned the $20,000 top prize for their efforts.
Lallchand Rambharose and Adrian Damon finished second and third respectively in the male category while Shondell Hyles and Victorine Chando copped the runner up and third place positions respectively in of the female division.
Second place finishers won $10,000 while the third place finishers took home hampers.
The tournament forms part of the preparation for the Americas Cup and Caribbean Championships in Trinidad early next month.
According to reports the GDA has named a 14-member squad to represent Guyana at the July 6-10 championships but the GDA is short $1.1 million.
Fitzgerald is the defending singles and doubles champion after winning the doubles championship with Luis Miguel Ramirez-Merlano.
The team for the championships is: – Rambharose, Hyles, 10-time national champion Norman Madhoo, Damon, Fedel Hunter, Andrew Balchand, Mary Correia, Smartt, Hemwantie Balchand and Chandro while GDA president Sheik Yaseen and Dr Terence Joseph will serve as manager and assistant manager respectively.
Madhoo represented Guyana four times at the Professional Darts Corporation World Championships and is one of the most successful players in the sport for Guyana.
Guyana performed well at the Central and South America World Championship Qualifiers where Fitzgerald won the Open Category and the mixed division with Chandro.
