An elderly farmer was beaten while his son was shot when bandits invaded their Canal No. 1 home in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
Divisional Commander Rishi Dass confirmed the attack, which took place around 2.30 am on Wednesday.
Dass said the attack was carried out by two masked men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, and that efforts were being made to apprehend the duo.
The attack occurred while Karan Mangal, 68, was in the yard of his Lot F Bordeaux, Canal No. 1, West Bank Demerara premises attending to his produce. His son, Peter Mangal, was in the upper flat of the house.
Peter was shot once in his right hand during the attack. He was rushed to the Woodlands Hospital and was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he is presently admitted in a stable condition.
Karan sustained minor injuries after he was gun-butted several times to his head.
This newspaper was told that the two suspects approached Karan and dealt him several blows to his head with their gun.
They then escorted him into the house, where they confronted Peter and started to demand cash. A scuffle ensued between Peter and the armed suspect and he was shot to his hand as a result.
The suspects then ran out of the house and escaped.
