A Mon Repos businessman was yesterday granted $1 million bail after he denied a charge of causing the death of a cyclist by dangerous driving.
Ramanand Jagdeo was read a charge by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman alleging that on February 22nd, 2018, at Peter’s Hall Public Road, he drove PRR 4395 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Alexander Appiah.
Jagdeo pleaded not guilty.
Police prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that on the day in question, at about 9 pm, Jagdeo was the driver of PRR 4395 and proceeding south along the eastern carriageway of the Peter’s Hall Public Road at a fast rate.
He added that the deceased, a pedal cyclist, was going in the same direction when he was struck by Jagdeo. Moore added that after the accident, Appiah’s right leg was severed. He was picked up and rushed to a hospital, where he died on February 28th.
Magistrate Latchman granted the accused his release on $1 million bail and adjourned the matter until June 19th, when it will be heard by the Chief Magistrate.
