On Sunday, Grenada took their first major step in order to compete at the third Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Tournament here in August.
According to President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, boxing officials from the island nation registered four boxers, three males and a female to do battle from August 17-19 at the National Gymnasium.
Ninvalle said he anticipates about 10 other island nations to follow the lead of ‘The Isle of Spice’.
Officials from St Lucia, Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica, Suriname, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Cayman Islands and others have signaled their intentions for their charged to compete during the three-day event.
Ninvalle further disclosed that a Grenadian coach and a referee/judge will also be part of the visiting contingent.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s preparations are well on the way for the tournament. The GBA has embarked on staging tournaments every two weeks in an effort to help flow the competitive juices of the local pugilists. The first one was staged on Saturday at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym. The next one is scheduled for June 23 at the same venue.
