Player of the match Erva Giddings and Shamaine Campbelle spurred Guyana senior female team to their first win in the Cricket West Indies Regional Female T20 Blaze tournament in Jamaica yesterday.
Bouncing back from an eight-wicket loss to Jamaica, Guyana thrashed the defending champions, Trinidad and Tobago by seven wickets.
Trinidad and Tobago posted 64-8 and Guyana aced the chase with Campbelle finishing it off in style with a six to see Guyana reach 70-3.
Trinidad faced three maiden overs upfront, losing Rachel Vincent caught in the slips and Britney Cooper who was bowled by Giddings who missed out on a hat trick.
Trinidad and Tobago lost their third wicket without a run on the board, but with a few extras they were in the contest.
Giddings third victim was the prized wicket of former West Indies women’s team skipper Merissa Aguilleira who fell with the score 4-4 after 4.5 overs.
Akaze Thompson and Plaffina Millington then made light work of the tail, picking up two for 12 and 14 respectively while Giddings ended on 3-6 from her four overs.
Shania Abdool, in only her second match was the standout of the Trinidad and Tobago’s innings, blasting 31 in an innings that saw no other batter reaching double figures.
In reply, Sheneta Grimmond got off to a blaze, hitting Anisa Mohammed straight back for a boundary in the first over that went for eight runs.
Stacy-Ann King had Grimmond playing one too many shots and was caught at mid-off by Rachel Vincent as Guyana reached 19-1 with Grimmond contributing 15.
Guyana lost Melanie Henry and Shabika Gajnabi in quick succession but the score was never a challenge as Guyana were coasting at 36-3 in the ninth over.
Campbelle got off to a blaze, hitting King for a six and four in successive deliveries before closing unbeaten on 44 inclusive of two sixes and four fours.
Earlier Guyana suffered a first round defeat against Jamaica.
Guyana, were restricted to a dismal 75-8 from their 20 overs after being asked to bat. Jamaican skipper, Stephanie Taylor claimed 2-11 while Roshauna Outar bagged 2-12 in their four overs.
Jamaica aced the chase with 17 balls to spare as Jodian Morgan top scored with 19. Natash McLean and Taylor, who also captains the West Indies female team produced 16 each with McLean and Chadeen Nation (15 not out) strolling to victory at 76-2 from 16.1 overs.
