A pedal cyclist of Essequibo Coast was fatally struck down on Monday night by a driver, who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
Dead is Lallman Narine Sahadeo, 41, a minibus conductor of Spring Garden Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
At the time of the accident, which occurred at around 6.30 pm, police said that Sahadeo was travelling south on the eastern carriageway, with the motor car, with licence plate PPP 6851, being driven behind him.
The statement noted that the driver, a 23- year old Forest Ranger whose “blood alcohol level was found to be exceedingly high” fled the scene. He was apprehended shortly after and taken into police custody.
Police, in a statement yesterday, said that the motor car which was proceeding behind the pedal cyclist suddenly collided with the rear of the cycle. As a result of the impact, the pedal cyclist fell onto the roadway where he was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Suddie Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
