Haemanthus commonly called Blood Lily is an exotic, tropical perennial that is grown from bulbs. And while you might assume from the name that this flower is red, it can come in white as well as a variety of reds – 60 to be precise.
The Blood Lily is easy to grow. Plant bulbs in an upright position in well-drained soil and water lightly. The soil should be moist, but not soggy. Bulbs sprout in 7 to 14 days with rich, green leaves. The flowers grow in clusters and appear to have small, flat heads. The highlight may very well be its yellow anthers that are bright and complement the red or white appearance well.
It can be planted outside, but the Blood Lily also makes an excellent house plant. It is very easy to maintain. Just make sure not to put it in extremely hot temperatures or in direct sunlight. An area that provides partial shade would be perfect.
Like most bulbs, the Blood Lily has a rest period during which it seemingly lies dormant before it shoots up again.
At present, my Blood Lilies are in full bloom.
NB: As the rain continues please check your potted plants to ensure that they have proper drainage and spike your lawns too.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
