Jason Jupiter, who was charged last month with two counts of attempted murder and one count of armed robbery, has seen two of the charges against him withdrawn.
At a hearing last Friday before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in George-town, Jupiter, 23, of Lot 8 West Front Road, heard from Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers that he was in receipt of a statement from the complainant in one of the attempted murder cases, Randy Sampson, and based on advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions he would be withdrawing the charge.
That charge had stated that the accused on March 2nd, at Laing Avenue, discharged a loaded firearm at Sampson, with intent to commit murder.
Jeffers also told the court that based upon the advice received, the court would be withdrawing the armed robbery charge against Jupiter alleging that he robbed Hardai Danasri of $150,000 while armed with a gun on April 2nd, at Saffon Street.
However, the court heard that the charge of the attempted murder of Doodnauth Danasri, allegedly committed by the accused on the same date and at the same place, would be proceeded with.
The case was later adjourned until June 28th and the accused was placed under the supervision of a probation officer for counselling until the completion of the preliminary inquiry into the charge.
This newspaper had reported that Doodnauth, 62, of Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara and his wife Meena Danasri were attacked at about 5.30 pm, on April 2nd, at their stall outside Twin’s Drug Store on Saffon Street by four unmasked men, one of whom was armed with a suspected .38 revolver.
Doodnauth was shot once in the region of his temple and to his hand and according to his wife, the bullet grazed his abdomen. The police had stated that Meena and Doodnauth were selling at the market when they were attacked by the bandits.
“Two men, one armed with a handgun and the other with a knife, pounced on her [Meena] and demanded the cash from her apron,” the police said.
As a result, Doodnauth rushed to her rescue and was shot in the head, they added, while noting that the apron containing an undisclosed amount of cash was handed over to the suspects, who escaped on a bicycle.
