Dominoes action is set to entertain the local audience here when the World Council of Dominoes Federation (WCDF) hosts its eighth biennial championships from October 4-18.
The championships will be hosted by the Guyana National Dominoes Federation for which its Local Organising Committee (LOC) is appealing for corporate support to fortify Guyana’s successful hosting of the event.
One of the LOC’s committee members, Emily Dodson, who acts in the capacity of the chairperson, told Stabroek Sport that the event is expected to attract many international teams.
Dodson indicated that Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Barbados, the United States of America, Canada, St Lucia and England are among some of the countries which have already confirmed their participation.
The event is expected to be a mega one where potential businesses can garner a lot of mileage since each country can register a maximum of 40 players.
The LOC was also instrumental in garnering government’s support with Minister with responsibility of Sport, Dr George Norton. identifying the Carifesta Sports Complex as the venue to host the event.
The LOC is also urging Guyanese to support the event since Guyana are the defending male champions after taking top honours in Antigua two years ago under the leadership of Gladstone George.
In light of Guyana’s success and a need to defend their title, the local team has already begun preparations. They will host a local dominoes fundraising competition and BBQ on July 15 at the Transport Sports Club, Thomas Lands, Georgetown to fortify their preparations.
That competition will be open to government agencies, corporate Guyana, and the private sector. For more information, interested agencies can contact George on 678-8447 and Yonette Christmas on 623-6613.
Meanwhile, for businesses that are keen on capitalising on the event, contact can be made with the Secretary of the LOC, Rodwell Phillips on 648-9000.
