A new champion will be crowned in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Berbice Championship, as Trafalgar crushed titleist New Amsterdam (NA) Kings 3-0 in the quarter-final round on Saturday.
It was a standout night for teams from the West Coast Berbice section, as three of the four semi-finalists emanate from that region.
Kevin McKenzie recorded a hat-trick in front of a mammoth crowd at the NA Stelling Tarmac.
McKenzie found the back of the net in the 16th minute, alongside a Guinness Goal-(GG)-(A goal scored in the final two minutes counts as two) in the 19th minute.
With the win, Trafalgar will now oppose Lichfield in the semi-final stage. In their quarterfinal clash, Lichfield edged East Bank Gunners 2-0 on penalty kicks, after regulation time ended scoreless.
In the other quarterfinal matches, Outsiders downed Dam Boys 1-0. Derick Taylor found the back of the net in the ninth minute.
On the other hand, Hopetown dismissed Mahaicony 2-0. Darren Douglas and Akeemo Watts scored in the 13th and 16th minute respectively.
In the earlier round of 16 stage, Trafalgar made light work of Platinum Squad 3-0. Adrian Prince fashioned a (GG) in the 19th minute, while Ryan Schultz netted in the 12th minute.
Lichfield earned their berth to the quarter-final section, edging Twenties 2-1 on penalty kicks, after regulation time ended 1-1.
Allan Garnett handed Lichfield the initial lead in the fourth minute, while Ronaldo Cassiano equalised for Twenties in the 15th minute.
Also, Hopetown secured their passage to the quarter-final stage, after defeating Young Strikers via walkover.
On the other hand, Outsiders defeated Street Knights 1-0 on penalty kicks, following a scoreless regulation time interval.
Up to press time, semi-final and eventual final was underway at the same venue.
Winner of the event will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy. They will also earn an automatic berth to the national championship.
On the other hand, the second, third and fourth placed sides will receive $125,000, $100,000, $75,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade. Below features a complete list of results.
