Trafalgar was crowned the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Berbice Champion after mauling Litchfield 4-0 in a West Coast Berbice derby on Sunday at the New Amsterdam (NA) Stelling Tarmac.
It was a lopsided clash, as the clinical Trafalgar unit romped to the title in front of a mammoth crowd, powered by a helmet-trick from Ryan Schultz.
The speedy Schultz opened the scoring in the third minute, racing away down the centre of the field, before finishing with the outside of his right boot into the right corner past the final defender.
Schultz made his presence felt once more as he found the back of the net in the sixth minute with a moment of individual brilliance.
Receiving the ball on the left flank of his half, Schultz evaded the challenges of two players and finished calmly past the final defender into right corner.
From this point onwards it was damage limitation for the Litchfield outfit, who seemed unable to formulate a plan to thwart the constant threat of their opponent.
Schultz completed his haul for the night to seal the win with a 38th minute Guinness Goal (GG)-(A goal scored in the final three minutes of the match counts as two).
Racing onto a through pass on the left side, Schultz, upon cutting into the centre of the field, placed his right-footed effort into the lower right corner.
Trafalgar pocketed $400,000 and the championship trophy. They also earned an automatic berth to the national championship.
Litchfield received $125,000 and the corresponding accolade. In the third place playoff, Hopetown edged Outsiders 1-0. Marvin Robertson netted in the fourth minute.
Hopetown walked away with $100,000 and a trophy whilst Outsiders received $75,000 and the corresponding accolade.
Earlier, in the semi-final round, Trafalgar edged Hopetown 2-1 on sudden death penalty kicks, the game ending in a scoreless draw at the end of normal time.
Litchfield then defeated Outsiders 2-0 with Carlos Grant bagging a double in the 22nd and 26th minute. The Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Bartica leg is set to commence shortly.
