Cleveland Williams, the man who allegedly stabbed the mother of his child on D’Urban Street in April, was yesterday committed to stand trial for attempted murder.
It is alleged that Williams, 46, on April 17th, 2018, at D’Urban Street, Lodge, unlawfully assaulted Lashana Boyce, with intent to commit murder.
The Preliminary Inquiry into the charge was conducted by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in Georgetown. Subsequent to further cross-examination of Boyce by Williams, the prosecution closed its case yesterday and urged the court to find that a prima facie case was made out against the accused.
Williams then heard that a prima facie case was made out against him and he was asked if he wished to say anything in relation to the charge. Williams, among other things, apologised to the accused for whatever he would have done and then told the Magistrate that if the case is referred to the High Court he wanted to be granted bail. Magistrate Latchman later told the accused that he was committed to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes. Williams then asked if he would be granted bail, while promising that he would be on his best behaviour. However, after an objection by Police prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves, his bail request was denied. It was the prosecution’s case that on the day of the attack, Williams approached Boyce and dealt her several stabs to her back.
