The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) is continuing with its tradition of hosting its annual Youth Summer Camp which rolls out from August 13-24.
The programme was officially launched at the club’s Queenstown location where Technical Development Officer (TDO) of the club, Mark Harper, explained what the programme is.
The former Guyana middle order batsman said the programme is expected to target 120 children with the age limit increased from 17 to 18 years to include some of the bigger children.
Harper said he is hopeful this year will be more successful than last year and laid out the star-studded line up that will be involved in the training.
Harper and Cricket West Indies selector, Travis Dowlin, will be responsible for batting in one of the ‘master class’ while his brother, Roger, president of DCC, along with Coach Garvin `Tibbsy’ Nedd will deal with the specialised spin bowling department.
Another former West Indies player in Reon King and Paul Wintz will be responsible for the pace bowling department.
The TDO said that the date was particularly set to accommodate others during the summer with the kids being classed in three age groups, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 with a medical personnel on board during the 10 days of action.
Notably, the children will be able to benefit from classroom sessions where they will study video analysis and the rules and regulations, among others.
Roger Harper said that the aim of this camp is to renew the focus on cricket development and also improve life skills as a means of helping the country develop as well.
Nedd, in his brief remarks alluded to some of the notable players who were privy to the programme including Michael Salim, Dexter George, Travis Persaud as well as Tevin Imlach, Ashmead Nedd and Raymond Perez who have represented the West Indies at the youth level. The club will be providing refreshments with players having to adhere to the dress code of track or short pants, white tee or polo tee shirts, track boots and socks and cricket whites.
