Five Guyanese, including West Indies players Shimron Hetmyer and Vishaul `Cheesy’ Singh have been named in the Cricket West Indies President’s XI squad to face Bangladesh in the lone two-day warm up match commencing today.
The squad, which consists of 12 players, sees Hetmyer and Singh joined by fellow countrymen, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Romario Shepherd and Gudakesh Motie.
Hetmyer returned home from the Sri Lanka Three test series after reportedly being ill while Singh will be looking to make an impact and stake his claim for a West Indies recall.
Alzarri Joseph also makes his return from injury and will partner with Shepherd as the spearhead bowlers.
Joseph, Hetmyer, Singh and Odean Smith are the only players in the squad to represent the West Indies senior side before.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of West Indies’ second leading run-scorer, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, has represented Guyana at the senior level as well as the West Indies Under-19 and is a solid left-handed batsman at the top of the order.
Hetmyer and Singh, both left-handed batsmen, will be eager to make runs and capitalize in the two-day match at the Coolidge Ground. This is the lone warm-up match before the first test which commences July 4.
The team features a young bunch with only three players over 25 years of age and will be captained by Barbados’ Shamarh Brooks. Bangladesh will tour the Caribbean and the United States for two tests, three One Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals.
Guyana will host the first two ODIs on July 23 and 25 at the Providence National Stadium.
