Dear Editor,
The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has finally ruled on the issue of presidential terms limits. The ruling did not come as a surprise to most Guyanese especially given the broad popular support for term limits by the two major political parties, namely the PPP and the PNC and the Guyanese people as a whole.
I have always held the view that presidential term limits are good for the political health of any society. We have seen the devastating effects on countries with leaders who sought to cling on to power even against the wishes of their own citizens or even their own party. Robert Mugabe was one such case but there are several more.
Presidential term limits are consistent with the norms of good and accountable governance and are now being embraced by an increasing number of countries. It is becoming an acceptable and integral component of modern and rules-based political systems throughout the world.
Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
