A Cornelia Ida fisherman was yesterday charged with the attempted murder of his ex-partner, whom he allegedly stabbed on Thursday.
The charge against Ramsowan Singh, 28, alleges that on June 28th, 2018, at Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Geeta Deochand, 27, with intent to commit murder.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which was read to him by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in Georgetown.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted based on the serious nature of the offence. He noted that Deochand, who had secured a restraining order against Singh, was still hospitalised.
According to police, Deochand was standing with her son when Singh attacked her. The man allegedly approached his son and asked to kiss the boy but he was denied by Deochand, which made him angry. The man then allegedly whipped out a knife, dealt her several stabs and made his escape. The woman was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
This newspaper was told that Singh was allegedly following Deochand for several days and waited until the road was clear to attack her.
