Consistent showers failed to dampen the spirits of the young cyclists who turned out for the fifth Hassan Mohammed organized Olympic Day cycling meet yesterday.
With only a handful of ecstatic youngsters taking to the track around the inner circuit of the National Park, Mohammed, who is the national cycling coach, said the event was a success taking into consideration the conditions.
“I would deem it a success, even though the showers had stopped some of the riders from coming,” Mohammed said.
“We did not have the turn out we expected but the cyclists turned out and we had a good day of clean fun, something we look forward to every year and we will only get bigger and better next year,” he added.
Jared Barrington was the first to register a win in the day’s action, taking home the BMX 6-9 years category by completing the two-lap race in seven minutes and 35 seconds. Barrington finished comfortably ahead of Jahvin Henry and Jesicka Mohabir in second and third while Lennox Jackman completed the top four in emphatic style.
Jaheme Henry notched up a win in the 9-12 years category with Mark Lewis and John Niles trailing in that order while returning to dominate the 12-14 years category with Marvin Knights and Shaquel Dow securing second and third respectively.
Henry said it was all about fun and winning for him, with nothing but first place running through his mind during the two-lap race.
Brandon DeNobrega was the only juvenile to turn out while no mountain bikers were in sight.
