Three youths were all remanded to prison last Friday after they were charged with robbing a man of $415,000 in valuables.
It was alleged that Gilbert Bennett, 20, and brothers Colin Liverpool, 19, and Courtney Liverpool, 17, armed with cutlasses, robbed Roy Findlay of $80,000 in cash, an iPhone 6S, valued $200,000, an iPhone 5S, valued $120,000, and a quantity of cigarettes, valued $15,000, at Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, on June 26th.
All three of the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The police prosecutor objected to bail being granted based on the seriousness of the offence and the fact that weapons were used during the commission of the crime.
The court heard that on the day in question, Bennett was held by the police with a cutlass and some of the items mentioned in the charge in his possession. He then allegedly admitted to the robbery and took police to the other two accused.
Bennett, however, told the court that he was beaten by police and that one of the arresting officers gave him a rusty cutlass along with a jersey and other items. Bennett said the officers told him what to
say and threatened his life if he did not comply.
Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman, who read the charges to the accused, denied bail and adjourned the proceedings until today.
