Warren ’40’ McKay’s mid-season form was on full display yesterday at the National Park. Two weeks after winning the veteran road race national title, ’40’ took his talents to inner circuit of the mecca of local cycling and sprinted off with the spoils of the veteran’s U-50 and the feature 35-lap event of the Malta Supreme multi-race programme.
Despite the inclement weather, McKay took pole position in a brisk one hour, 13 minutes and 12 seconds in the main event, leading Christopher Griffith and Romello Crawford onto the podium.
National Senior Road Race champion, Cortis Dey, Deeraj Garbarran and Paul DeNobrega filled out the top six rewarding positions during the ninth annual staging of the event.
After DeNobrega led a four-man break in the third lap, ’40’ and the rest of the peloton worked to reconnect, eventually wheeling in the leaders in the 29th lap. From there, ’40’ and the rest of the top six created separation from the pack. They teamed up to stretch their advantage but team work was thrown out the window with about 150m from the line. McKay, the father of 10, proved to have the freshest legs when it mattered most and crossed the line about three bike lengths clear of his nearest rival, Griffith.
Jaheim Henry (BMX 9-12 and 12-14), Ian Jackson (veteran O-50), David Hicks (12-14 Boys and Girl and Juveniles), Mario King (Mountain Bike) and Jessica Mohabir (BMX 6-9) were also in the winner’s row for the Hassan Mohamed organized fixture.
