A pensioner, who police say had three pounds of cannabis for trafficking, was yesterday remanded to prison.
John Lovell, 68, stood in the Georgetown courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, where he proclaimed his innocence while calling for the legalization of ganja.
The charge against Lovell alleges that on July 6th, at Port Kaituma Waterfront, he had 1,361 grammes (equivalent to 3 pounds) of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Lovell, a miner of 31 Providence, East Bank Demerara, denied the allegation.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail being granted, citing the fact that the drugs were found in a bag in the defendant’s possession.
Lovell then pleaded with the court to grant him bail, while stating that he would ensure that he attends the court sessions.
“It’s the 21st century where they need to legalize the herbs,” he said.
Lovell added that the situation he is in is very unfortunate but he will prove he is innocent when the trial commences.
