Aglaonema commonly called Chinese Evergreen is grown for its leaves which are famous for their colours and delicate markings. These markings can range from silver, cream, white, and green. New hybrids have leaves in two tones of red and green, pink and green and salmon and green with white markings.
The leaves are elongated with parallel sides or oval shaped which grow at the tip of the stalks. An old mature plant will form a short trunk which can look similar to a yucca or dracaena, in the way the lower leaves come away and leave marks. When the plant matures in growth and age it can produce very small flowers which then turn into berries. If these do appear they grow between the leaves and are quite insignificant.
Chinese Evergreen plants are excellent indoor plants. The level of care needed for this plant is quite moderate. Plant in well-drained soil and fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food once every 2 weeks.
Until next week, Happy Gardening.
