Andre Russell makes his return to the West Indies One Day side that will play Bangladesh in three matches beginning in Guyana on Sunday.
The 13-man squad that was released by Cricket West Indies has listed the Jamaican All-rounder who last played a One Day International back in 2015 but has been a part of various T20 Leagues across the world.
Russell with a strike rate of 130 has four half centuries to his name and is also a tear away fast bowler with 64 wickets to his name.
Russell is joined by pacer, Alzarri Joseph who was drafted into the test squad following his recovery from injury but did not make it into the XI.
Guyanese trio, who featured in the successful test series, Keemo Paul, Shimron Hetmyer and Devindra Bishoo are also part of the squad that is expected to arrive in Guyana today.
Following a successful campaign for the West Indies A team in England, Jason Mohammed has also found himself in the side with Chris Gayle also listed.
Mohammed, who has already captained the side scored two centuries and a fifty in England will look to solidify his position in the team.
Noticeably missing from the squad that represented the Caribbean in the World Cup qualifiers is Marlon Samuels and Carlos Brathwaite while Jason Holder returns as the skipper.
With less than a year before the 2019 Cricket World Cup (May 30 to July 14) Head Coach, Stuart Law has his eyes fixed on gaining momentum heading towards the tournament. But before that Coach is clear on the team’s mandate. “This is the start of our prep for 2019 CWC. Opportunities for players to stake a claim to be included in the squad. Great to have Dre Russ back as well. His explosive power and energy will breathe life into an already motivated squad.”
Chairman of Selectors, Courtney Browne notes “As we continue to prepare, there are only 16 ODIs leading up to the tournament. The panel will focus on giving opportunities from time to time to players that we believe can add value to the ODI team. Kemar Roach will be rested for the upcoming series as we continue to manage players’ work load. With the Super50 Championship set for October this year, we will also have an opportunity for regional players to perform heavily and place themselves in line to be considered for selection. The panel wishes Jason and his team every success in the upcoming series against Bangladesh.”
West Indies will face Bangladesh in three ODIs, the first two being in Guyana, the first on Sunday with the second match booked for Wednesday July 25 being the first ever day and night affair at Providence National Stadium.
