National squash players Sunil Seth, Jason – Ray Kahlil and Mary Fung – A – Fat captured first-round wins in the ongoing Central America and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Colombia yesterday.
Seth got his campaign going with a straight-set win over David Gonzalez of the Dominican Republic 11-8, 11-4, 11-3 to build a strong case of advancing his title bid. The Guyanese was set to play Arturo Salazar of Mexico in his second match of the day; however, there were no updates as of press time.
Jason – Ray Khalil, on the other hand, who showed good form in the just-concluded national tournament, downed Nku Patrick of Trinidad and Tobago 11-9, 11-5, 11-6 in his opening match. He was set to play Salazar in his second match of the day.
Second round wins for both Seth and Kahlil will land them a place in the quarter finals. In the female category, Guyana’s national squash champion Fung – A – Fat eased her way past Charlotte Knaggs 11-3, 11-5, 11-3 to advance to the quarter finals where she will take on top seed Samantha Tehran of Mexico, today.
There was no celebrating, however, for Guyana’s 2017 junior Caribbean Area Squash Association gold medallist Taylor Fernandes who was defeated by Bajan Amanda Haywood who ironically was on the receiving end of Fernandes’ 2017 championship win.
Haywood, however, who won this year’s junior CASA title which ended two weeks ago in Jamaica, brought that form over to Colombia to trump Fernandes 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5.
